Reporting to the Manager, Vancouver Island Operations, the Intermediate Distribution Designer is responsible for the overall execution of underground/overhead electrical distribution projects at our Victoria location.

Responsibilities:

  • Electrical design to support underground and overhead electrical distribution infrastructure (4kV – 25kV system voltages).
  • Produce design drawings & estimations in BC Hydro applications, including (but not limited to) Gateway, DAD, Passport & SAP.
  • Power pole structural analysis, cable pulling, voltage drop, and transformer loading calculations.
  • Reviewing 3rd party drawings such as civil, architectural, landscape, and on-site electrical to coordinate and eliminate design conflicts.
  • Site visits to assess existing electrical power infrastructure and coordinate designs
  • Project schedule management and tracking.
  • Research and application of engineering standards and codes.
  • Design coordination with customers, municipal authorities, other utilities, and various project stakeholders.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Engineering Technologist Diploma or Bachelor of Engineering / Applied Science degree from a recognized college or university (Civil or Electrical preferred).
  • Experience preparing detailed markups in Bluebeam/Adobe Pro.
  • Computer savvy with proven ability to learn new software.
  • Strong collaborative and organizational skills to plan, organize, and implement work, within a specified budget, while meeting the project deadlines.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and drive for improvement.
  • Analytical, thorough, resourceful, detail-oriented, and strong understanding of design basis.
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to develop business relationships conducted in a professional manner.
  • Proficient in working within a Microsoft Windows network environment and in the use of Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, and other Office 365 programs.

A few qualifications that will help you succeed:

  • Experience designing BC Hydro overhead and/or underground systems.
  • Experience modeling pole lines and structures with PLS-CADD and/or SpidaCalc.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license and capable of distance driving within BC, when required.
