We have an opening for a Senior Substation Engineer in our Mississauga, ON office.


Responsibilities:

Electrical Design and Power System Studies

  • Perform and direct others in the detailed design high voltage (HV) and extra-high voltage (EHV) utility and private substations, serving as the primary technical authority.
  • Develop and oversee key design deliverables including single-line diagrams and complete engineering drawing, calculation, and specification packages.

HV/EHV Systems:

  • Prepare general substation arrangement drawings (plan & substation layout, elevation, grounding, conduit/trench, cable routing, detail drawings and control buildings layouts).
  • Specify and integrate high voltage switches, circuit breakers, and power transformers and other station apparatus.
  • Design bus configurations, grounding systems (per IEEE 80), and lightning protection systems (per IEEE 998)
  • Apply modern protective relaying techniques and design SCADA/communications interface systems.
  • Perform electrical studies and calculations to support station design work such as grounding, lightning protection, insulation coordination, AC/DC system sizing, power transformer sizing, circuit breaker selection, conductor sizing, etc.
  • Conduct power system studies including load flow, voltage drop, fault, and arc-flash analyses using CYME or ETAP.
  • Develop innovative engineering solutions and apply theoretical and practical knowledge in modelling, analysis, and problem solving.

Project Delivery

  • Ensure successful execution of assigned projects, accountable to the team lead for quality, cost, and schedule.
  • Coordinate with the project team to maintain adherence to project timelines and deliverables.
  • Direct and mentor engineers, designers, and drafters to ensure technical specifications, budget constraints, and project timelines are achieved.
  • Prepare project estimates, material take-offs, and other supporting documentation.
  • Support the planning and delivery of multiple concurrent projects, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with client and regulatory standards.

Client Coordination

  • Grow and manage client relationships, particularly with alliance clients, ensuring satisfaction and long-term partnership.
  • Initiate, attend, and actively participate in customer and stakeholder meetings.
  • Coordinate designs and project deliverables with clients, utilities, municipal authorities, and other project stakeholders to obtain necessary approvals and resolve technical issues.
  • Provide technical leadership during vendor engagement, equipment selection, and contractor coordination.

 Field & Site Support

  • Conduct off-site meetings, site visits, and inspections to verify that construction aligns with design intent and issued-for-construction drawings.
  • Provide technical support to contractors and field personnel to ensure accurate and safe implementation of designs.
  • Support testing and commissioning activities, with strong focus on safety and system reliability.

Documentation & Specifications

  • Prepare and review technical documentation including equipment specifications, design drawings, and tender packages.
  • Support the tendering and procurement process by developing bid documentation and evaluating technical submissions.
  • Maintain organized project files and records in accordance with company and client standards.

Other Duties

  • Perform other related duties as required to support the Power Systems Engineering team in achieving company and departmental objectives.
  • Collaborate with other departments at Primary to provide technical input, share knowledge, and contribute to cross-disciplinary project success.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive team culture that promotes technical excellence, safety, and accountability.
  • Lead the preparation and submission of IESO Connection Impact Assessment (CIA) and System Impact Assessment (SIA) applications.
  • Perform and review power system studies required to support CIA and SIA processes, including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, and stability analysis.
  • Coordinate with IESO, transmitters, distributors, and other stakeholders throughout the assessment process.
  • Interpret study results and develop mitigation plans to address identified system constraints.
  • Support project development from feasibility through regulatory approval.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or equivalent in Canada
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in electrical utility and/or power systems engineering
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to autonomously manage workload to control multiple tasks with a high degree of accuracy, while meeting project deadlines
  • Strong English language skills (verbal and written), ability to develop strong business relationships and act in a professional manner
  • A passion for your work and a drive for excellence
  • Class 5 driver’s license

Additional Assets:

  • Be a self-starter and able to plan ahead and solve engineering problems
  • Good aptitude for business development and establishing new client contacts and developing collaborative relationships
  • Is a team player and supports professional development and knowledge sharing and supporting other team members including Junior Engineers/EITs, Designers, and Drafters

 

Salary Range: $60.00 – $80.00 per hour
