Wolf Midstream/NGL Permanent Powerlines

Wolf Midstream/NGL Permanent Powerlines

Location: Fort Saskatchewan, AB

Project StartDate:
Project End Date:
  • Our team completed the estimate and design of 7.8km of overhead and underground powerlines.
  • Primary’s construction crew completed the construction of overhead powerlines.
  • Completion of bulk estimate for Three-Phase single circuit to provide electrical power of 25 kV up to 18 MVA.
  • Designed a Three-Phase double circuit powerline with overhead and underground distribution and completed an estimate, including a neutral wire, for the same powerline.
  • Technical design and approval for two river crossings, two railway crossings and three AltaLink transmission line crossings.
  • Stringing ropes were shot 230 meters across the North Saskatchewan River to facilitate the installation of the overhead conductors. (Watch the video on the right!)

Primary was contracted by FortisAlberta to design and construct the overhead and underground powerline extensions required to provide Wolf Midstream’s Fort Saskatchewan plant with a new 25 kV service of up to 18 MVA. The original scope called for a single three-phase circuit with a neutral wire; however, to improve reliability and support uninterrupted plant operations, the design was expanded to a double-circuit configuration.

Meeting the facility’s significant load requirements was a key consideration throughout the project. A suitable substation was identified to supply the required capacity, and the existing distribution system was upgraded and reconstructed with larger conductors to establish the connection to the site. The work included developing new overhead and underground alignments, navigating river crossings with two three-phase circuits, crossing an underground AltaLink transmission line at three locations, and installing underground infrastructure beneath CN railway tracks at two locations.

Despite challenging weather conditions and a complex construction environment, Primary’s design and construction teams worked closely throughout the project to coordinate activities, resolve challenges, and deliver the new electrical service on schedule.
